Who can have acupuncture?
Anyone can have acupuncture regardless
of age or illness. Acupuncture can be combined with Western drug
therapy and it can be used to treat acute or chronic disease.
As with any therapy, however, the response and success of acupuncture
can vary from individual to individual.
How
many treatments will I need?
There is no set number of treatments required.
On average (unless in intense pain) treatments will be once a
week from any thing between 4 and 10 session. Sometimes the effects
are dramatic and you may need only one or two treatments, sometimes
the effects are subtle and you may need treatment for several
months. Usually beneficial changes are experienced within a few
sessions.
- How will I feel during and after treatment?
Usually a feeling of peace and relaxation
comes over people during acupuncture treatment and you should
be fine to travel home alone afterwards. If you are in any doubt,
you could take a friend with you on your first visit.
- Is there a risk of infection with acupuncture
treatment ?
All practitioner members of the British Acupuncture
Council's register are fully conversant with and must observe
a Code of Practice containing strict rules regarding hygienic
procedures and sterilisation of needles. These procedures have
been approved by the Department of Health. Acupuncture carried
out under the British Acupuncture Council's Code of Practice is
approved by the Blood transfusion services of the UK for people
who wish to donate blood .
- Should I let my doctor know that I intend
to have acupuncture and will my acupuncturist keep in touch with
my doctor to tell him \ her how I am progressing ?
If you are receiving treatment from your doctor,
he \ she is entitled to know your intentions about having acupuncture
as well. Your acupuncturist will be only too happy to keep your
doctor informed of your progress if you ask him \ her to do so
